one benefit to my job is that i get to press the switches for the conveyor belt on the checkout.

there’s a switch to turn on the power, when that’s on you can press a switch to start the belt. the switch for the belt is also an on/off switch like a light switch but it should really be a button cause it functions like that: you turn it on to start the belt, then you can switch it off, it probably won’t stay on anyway, then you have to switch it on again to stop the belt.
there is a big red button labelled emergency stop that will stop the belt, you have to twist it clockwise a little to release it, the belt won’t start while it’s pressed in.
there is another on/off switch that turns in a red light to call someone over so long as the power’s on but this system was succeeded by another system that was succeeded by everyone wearing wireless headsets and then that was changed a bit so idk the call switch is long dead.

everyone else i’ve observed doesn’t seem to understand how it works and just flicks switches at random until the belt turns on.

It's pretty cool finding parts of your job that you enjoy despite other people not vibing with it. Like I work in hospitality and one of my favorite parts about it is stacking/arranging things. It's pretty useful to enjoy doing something that other people find tedious.
