one of the funnier things with old games is finding out the compatibility they do have. Butcher Bay for example wasn't reading my keyboard inputs properly at first. why? because it had fully mapped and recognized my controller! my ps4 controller. with no third-party program helping it. BB launched ONE YEAR before Xinput became a thing! fuck you microsoft!

a really cool feature from butcher bay that nobody cares about except for me is how you're fully modelled. the tradeoff is having slightly awkward and heavy movement but it lends some ideas like here, where your gun automatically swaps angles when approaching cover types. it's a genuinely useful mechanic that the later Wolfenstein games would run all the way with.

escape from butcher bay is a fascinating title in the FPS sphere because, in many ways, it's a prototype of what the modern Wolfenstein games would become. the exact same team would go on to make New Order and, while that game would refine what's here, Butcher Bay has all the same ideas of seamless stealth/combat.

it's also a really funny case of "hollywood actors do voice acting". vin diesel's alot more likeable as a videogame protagonist but he's mumblymumbling every single line, assuming there's a camera in his face.
