deus ex human revolution's XP system is so funny. one of the joys of classic DE is discovering a shortcut or strategy to bypass an obstacle. you weren't externally rewarded, the satisfaction came from it being your discovery.

but because HR rewards you for absolutely everything, you end up finding all the shortcuts possible, even though you've already solved it. found a vent to get past the turret? oh no you don't, hacking the terminal nets you 150xp too, go back and do it.

this isn't unenjoyable mind. im a videogame kleptomaniac by nature and HR scratches that itch something fierce. it's just a good laugh that everything im doing makes no sense whatsoever in the game's world.

i do love HR, despite its flaws. it's still the second-best deus ex (because... i mean cmon). mankind divided certainly plays like a dream but i find HR's writing much more engaging and less "AAA studio ham-fisting a racial allegory"

whenever i replay human revolution i always clean out the apartment complex and make a Corpse Pile. it's just not deus ex without the ol' Corpse Pile. great game.
