ive been replaying Halo Combat Evolved as a wee antidote to having binged a giant final fantasy in one week. need a shooter.

im still extremely divided on it. for all the impressive feats Halo 1 achieves (grandiose environments, brilliant enemy AI, good writing, how-the-fuck-was-this-on-the-original-xbox) it just carks it with level design. every mission feels more indebted to Bungie's signature worldbuilding than anything fun; giant empty rooms and repetitive hallways that im sure makes sense in some Halo bible but is beyond tedious to play. even the covenant, one of Halo's strengths in the combat department, seem tossed into the world without much thought to interesting encounters. none of them are utilized or placed to create different scenarios, it's just a group.

the sequels would improve in this regard, thankfully. ODST is my pick for the best one.

the fact that this giant valley was managed on classic xbox blows my fucking mind

... and it's just a few enemies thrown in, wandering around.
