@pig has alerted me to the english language translation of Random Dungeon by hamsuta_rpg. can't vouch for the english translation since i haven't checked it yet, but i will say this is one of those rpg maker games that pushes the default battle system in the engine to new frontiers.

and zakuaku is even wilder.

contrary to the title, Random Dungeon isn't "random" or procgen-ing the maps ala Spelunky series. instead, it's cycling through a series of maps where you grab items fast and immediately go to the next floor. i've not played the game deeply enough, but it does strike me as a Diablo-lite where you try to equip some cool items and get to hitting some bosses. this game is quite grindy and if you dig it, you'll really dig it.

i'm only familiar with its "sequel", Zakuzaku Actors, which is a far more successful and popular title. that game has a 50 hour-ish main scenario replete with interesting combat design, a light city-building simulator that affects the RPG stats of your characters, and (as of this writing) 150 hours of postgame content. i've only played 50 hours of the postgame content so far and there's a boss fight with this kickass theme that really broke my mind. marion will just wipe your party in the first turn if you are not prepared. that's the kind of boss fight postgame zakuaku does lol.

hamusta_rpg, the creator, is kinda like the RPG Maker version of ZUN. he's never really designed games or even drawn characters, so there's an amateur vibe to it. in Random Dungeon, he never used anything original; he used assets from the default RPG maker tileset and music packs from teams like rengoku teien. however, he took it upon himself to try something original in Zakuzaku Actors by learning how to draw and tell stories. so zakuaku starts from being this middling jrpg story to something rather grandiose and kinda nice looking at the end. the game is the most Doujin Soul i've ever seen and it's ... free.

and this SOUL was so powerful that it garnered a really strong fandom. this is the only free game i know that got an akiba themed cafe for example. i can only compare its reputation to the likes of Homestuck lol.

i haven't checked the translation of Random Dungeon yet, so i can't say if it's faithful. i've not even gone that far into the game to really say much, but i do like zakuaku. it's one of the most interesting rpg maker games out there, even if many people probably won't like it. def check out this stuff at least.

p.s. lol at the translation team wanting to take on zakuaku but having to pause because the game is in fact still being developed.

So, uh, hi...
You noticing our translation is kind of a "meet your heroes" moment for our team, considering that one of the entire reasons that we're translating anything at all is because of this blog post of yours: https://mimidoshima.wordpress.com/2020/04/29/rpg-maker-games-are-more-ethical-than-aaa-games/

You see, way back when, the person who would become our project's TL lead heard some of Mozell's music on youtube, wondered who these lovely characters featured in the art of Mozell's videos were, and went to track down as much information as possible. Between the music, the art of a chonky blonde that they would later find to be Kanadzuchi Daimyojin, and the fact that it was featured on a blog that says Y U R I in great big letters up at the top, the course was set.

While its themes might not apply to the majority of prospective players, Zakuzaku Actors resonated deeply with me. I think that's also related to what you called Doujin Soul. It may not look fancy at first glance or strike a chord with everyone, but those who get it, get it.

Er, sorry for rambling about an entirely different game. I had a whole paragraph about my favorite character in Zakuzaku, but I deleted it lol. I do hope this post wasn't annoying to see, and I also hope that our translation of Random Dungeon meets your standards or is at least enjoyable to read. Its story isn't nearly as deep as ZZA, but I did like how it explores relationships between women in many senses of the phrase. The mini-gacha-like aspect of opening chests is also addictively fun and somehow relaxing at the same time. It's no wonder that hamusuta left a warning in the readme about overdoing item collection.
--Rusty Cradle's playtester and kinda-spokesperson.

P.S. hamusuta mostly used music from 煉獄庭園 and あしなが☆おにいさん in Random Dungeon. There isn't any Mozell in that game.

We might eventually need another playtester for Zakuaku, as it seems that I kinda stink at it considering I've had to upload new versions of Random Dungeon twice already when it's only been like two weeks since I first posted it.

On the subject of Zakuaku in general, what are your thoughts on Menyaanya? She's a fan-favorite in the Japanese fandom as well as my own personal favorite character. In my view, she's a subversion of the neurodivergent genius stereotype.
She really is smart, but the reason that she's so successful is because she's driven to compete with Shinobu. However, Menyaanya's subordinates don't get that. They attribute it all to her being special, and they feel that they can let her handle everything because she's different from them, a savant, and it's shown to be extremely damaging to her.

i got so into her that i commissioned an avatar of her for discord a while ago. indeed, i like how she’s not exactly The Smart Woman. she’s arrogant and vulnerable too. she’s definitely the reason why i went from “hmm zakuaku seems okay” to “yep, i love this game”
