i just want to know how the hell Patreon manages to fuck up their One Job so often. it's not like they're particularly busy with anything else. people have been begging for a gallery system, a mass post editor, etc. for years and years and they don't do shit, all they really seem to do is re-arrange the UI to be even less intuitive and occasionally terrorize their userbase by making headass proposals for changes to the site.

after they threatened to touch crypto bullshit in late 2021, i ditched them entirely for ko-fi, which is not a viable solution for anyone who creates NSFW content. i wish there were more alternatives for people because honestly, patreon sucks ass. 10 years in, this kind of shit is absolutely inexcusable. the concept of patreon is so good. the thing it does, or at least it is supposed to do, is good. unfortunately it is entirely untrustworthy because it is run by fucking dipshits.

in reply to @doodlemancy's post:

at the very least cohost is working on adding subscriptions and if they can time it to line up with patreon fucking up their one job then we could get cohost to go down again

well i know that tipping's coming pretty soon which is exciting! no idea when subscriptions is gonna happen tho. here's hoping sooner rather than later, but hey.

side note cohost now is very different from cohost back in november last year. like this place is actually growing! it's pretty cool to see.

to be fair to ko-fi it's not necessarily that the administration is anti-nsfw; it's that payment processors (namely paypal, but also stripe, but also just all of them ever since FOSTA/SESTA) are big assholes about adult content, and they don't have the same kind of weight to throw around that Patreon does. from what i understand the biggest problem is the USA's increasing censoriousness. we'd probably have more alternatives if right wing evangelical weirdos didnt' run goddamn everything

Pixiv has something called fanbox that might be worth looking into-- idk exactly how usable it is for people outside Japan but i thiiiiink there are some international creators on there? i was subbed to MangaMaterials there for a while so they definitely take payments from here, i just don't know how accessible it is creator-side, a lot of pixiv proper is sort of half-translated LOL

It's kinda fascinating how Infinite Growth Capitalism Brain means no company can be content with a massive stable income flow anymore.

Patreon's only two jobs are 1) host data 2) move money and one of those is automatically profitable and the other is infinitely sustainable if you can get users to pay for it and they found a way to do that but still insist on fucking it up

and like... it's not even that they couldn't possibly keep growing AND improving. it's just that it would require them to do something other than fuck around all day. like my dudes, maybe if your mobile app wasn't broken and you actually added frequently-requested features, more people would show up.

i guess if there's anything i've learned in my adult life it's that the people at the top of any business are, largely, dumb as shit, and any success tends to happen in spite of them.
