Microsoft got sick and tired of people finding ways to disable Edge through all ways short of (and sometimes including) uninstalling it, so they made an update which causes all Windows updates to be available for download and install only through the Edge process. You have to have Edge fully enabled, or you don't get continued product support. It's actually evil.
this is so funny. also if you, for some godforsaken reason, Have To keep Edge usable but want to get around windows updates, Windows Update Blocker has been saving my life for years. it doesn't seem to be well-known but i've had really good luck with it!
