got an email from bluesky. they got a new logo and everything is visible to the public web now (opt-out only). they also added lists. "oh good, I can put my friends who went to Bluesky on a list and see just their posts, to keep up," I think.

not so fast! lists are public. so if I make a list of my best friends, everyone on the entire world wide web will know who my friends are

damn website is designed and run by mutants

In a funny way I think the butterfly works well for Bluesky because it communicates how lightly they think of social media and its impacts. A certain naiveté they keep expressing by shipping features in the most "I've never experienced bad things online" way possible.

i think the alt front-end https://deck.blue/ may have a private list implementation but that doesn't share with any other app of course.

the public list stuff and public blocks are so weird. like nire said, there are crypto design decisions showing

there are programmable lists/feeds though, like lists that only include member's posts when tagged with a 🧪, or a dynamic list that shows posts by your quieter follows. i also don't see bluesky ever being meaningfully federated, just the super huge main instance (with people using custom domain handles) and a only a handful of super nerds with personal servers.

List have been a thing there, and have been public for quite a while now

Mostly for the purpose of public blocklists

(Who decides who goes on a specific list? Whoever created the list of course)

I guess. I’m just annoyed because it feels too cute for the company who thought shipping a website without blocks was a good idea and who can’t moderate properly without being yelled at.
