Gardening is all about man vs nature

Behold my very good and not at all ramshackle home defense against birds!

The cherry tree is really doing the donuts, but the local robins are also very excited about the bumper crop. The internet suggested shiny things and noisemakers, and this is what I had on hand. It also suggested netting, but I don't really want to hurt any birds.

The real trick is I need to think of new ones in the next few days, since they have to be rotated out - the robins will figure out they're harmless soon enough! Maybe splurge and get one of those weird predator eye balloons. Or start asking my neighbors for cans they can't return!

Lmao there's no reason I should be surprised that there are specific anti-Whimsy measures, especially after you gave me the truncated list of things they've eaten. Id love to see them!

There's some bird safe netting out there, but it can be costly depending on the area you need to cover. If you install stiff netting on a frame that keeps it in place birds are much less likely to get caught on it than if you just drape loose netting.

can I ask what exactly you did here? it looks like cans hanging from the tree? as a noisemaker? just trying to understand what i'm looking at.

Hahahaha, it's hard to see for sure. I have groups of cans with pennies in them for noise making, and then strips of aluminum foil for shiny. The cans aren't super effective as there hasn't been a ton of wind, but it's better than nothing

i have also seen aluminum pie plates, which spin unpredictably without too much wind.

when i had a row of strawberries i started putting red flat glass marbles from the craft store around the plants before the berries ripened, so the robins would peck the marbles and learn not to bother the strawberries. turns out rabbits and squirrels are probably colorblind tho.

Getting a ton of pie plates from the dollar store seems like a great phase two, thanks for the idea!

Also pocketing the strawberry idea for next year, it's genius.
