Oh boy, it's that time of the month already - The Tim Follin Rabbit Hole Power Hour!

My main exposure to his music back then was from playing a ton of Plok!, which I recognised at the time as having an incredible soundtrack, but hadn't really been exposed to any of his other works because they weren't especially popular. Pairing the music his wrote for the games he worked on is a lot like watching that drummer in the red Japanese mascot suit. The Pictionary intro is incredible but please do not miss out on his other jams:

Solstice - Title Screen
Inventive prog rock epics condensed into a three minute loop are a common theme with his music. And that intro??? Did he really need to do that to a NES soundchip???

Silver Surfer - Level 1
Another "Tim please stop this is going unnecessarily hard" moment. Divine.

Plok! - Boss
A ominous and devious SNES boss theme that doubles as a certified dance floor banger. That dirty, driving bass line is so fucking good, augh. I'm not sure anyone's done it justice (though some have tried) but this one could absolutely be updated with modern production and be just as addictive and heart-pumping. Plok's OST was co-composed with his brother Geoff Follin.

Plok! - Beach

I had to get one more Plok choice in there because it's my post damnit, but it's so hard to pick. Check the notes on this video for the insane attention to detail on the composition and hardware and how the SNES soundchip was pushed to its absolute limit, a Follin trademark. The song is a journey and I'm not much of a fan of shredding/solos in general but god this guitar solo slaps.

There's a ton more to dig into, people love his Time Trax OST, literally the entire Plok OST and more but hey, you know how to use youtube. Here's a Best Of playlist someone put together!

"Yeah, Tim, thanks for coming in. So listen, we've got this level, it's just stupid unfair, you're being chased by a giant spiked ball, there's bottomless pits and walls everywhere, I bet the average person playing it will last maybe 20 seconds, MAYBE, before throwing their controller in frustration."

"Right. What we're saying here, Tim, is, really, no need to tax yourself too hard on this one--a short simple loop will suffice, maybe ten seconds."

"Okay, so what I've gathered from this information is that you want a four-minute pseudo-prog epic that for no particular reason goes into something resembling late period Led Zeppelin about two thirds of the way through. Got it."

"What the hell? Tim, no, really, that's not--"

"WE GOT YOU FAM."

(I will point out that this was also co-composed with Geoff Follin)
