There's something about the idea of characters within a constantly-retold narrative being aware of how their world warps as new storytellers with new agendas add and remove things, but being powerless to stop it, that just gets me. The drift of characterization turning a sibling, a lover, a friend into a stranger. A fanwork can be a way of interacting with and talking about that shift at an emotional level.
