in reply to @dsy's post:

my number 1 rec is 1password. it looks really nice and is very reliable imo. also it's really good on mac. my fallback rec is bitwarden. it looks ugly but i've heard really good things about it and it's free but it doesn't seem like it's sketchy?

the free software one (free as in anti-capitalist and community driven, not just price) is keepass, and the shinier GUI version that most people use is keepassxc. they are compatible.

bitwarden and dashlane are commercial, although free from cost in some scenarios, and are by all reports quite solid on the security side of things.

we do not personally suggest lastpass or 1password because they are not designed to let you store the data on your own infrastructure, which is something that we do think people should care about.

To be honest, I’ve had the most usable experience with Mac OS / iOS integrated password manager, and it’s apparently pretty solid for security, at least compared to a lot of the others. Its integrated autofill is nice, and its sync across devices works well.

It has the drawback of you need a mac/iphone/ipad to use it, and the autofill integration only works on apple software (read: Safari and no other browsers).

Apparently they have a windows app + chrome extension (and only windows, since they super want you to use safari if you’re on mac), but I haven’t tried it

I used keepass, but it felt pretty clunky, and the sync addons were kinda not great. The windows edition has had a bunch of security audits to make sure it’s secure, but I don’t think that’s the case for other platforms’ apps maintained by the community

I also used “pass” which is a command line password utility that’s intentionally super simple in its implementation. You need to be a turbo nerd to use it effectively.

I’m scared to use chrome’s built-in password manager and haven’t tried it
