a "problem" i have with cohost is that a good number of people have cool websites, which makes me want a cool website, but i just followed one of those "how to make a website in 2022" guides and researched hosts and am staring at the checkout button and now I am having the thought, what the fuck do I need a website for?

If designing the site itself was fun, then that can be it's purpose. Whether or not you want to pay to host it just for that is up to you.
honestly as someone with a debatably-cool website the appeal of having a website is kinda just for the fun of having a website. which is why like half the folks i know with websites do it through neocities cuz it's free
this is a good point. i was looking at dreamhost's large deal packages but i think neocities is probably smarter for being free and more non-committal... 🤔 thank you for this consideration!
of course! if you are looking for something with more features than neocities offers i can recommend you my webhost? but also they are kinda finicky to use so i honestly don't know that i'd recommend them over neocities unless you really need extra features
don't pay for web hosting unless it's how you make your living imho
(i don't count things like neocities' $5/mo supporter tier in this since all you actually need is in the free tier)
