I believe that many thieveries went wrong when the thief got caught while distracted petting a cat, so it's an important and relevant feature, I think.
Thieves don’t pet cats as they are allied with the cat’s natural prey, the rat. It will however meow loudly if Garrett gets close to it, alerting enemies to his presence. Damn thing was practically begging for a stab if you ask me.
Don't worry I think the Thief reboot modern game already worker on getting them shut down
