Reject GOTY (Game Of The Year)
Embrace BOOTY (Best Offering Of The Year)
But I MUST MAKE LISTS how else can video games determine their right to exist if I don’t rank them?
Hey by all means make lists and gush about your favorites! I do the same. People just need to stop with the GOTY shit every time a hot new game comes out. Play it, digest it, talk about it in depth with other players, maybe even try to say something meaningful about it if you want to get others interested.
But the most boring thing to say about a game is: GOTY. Like walking out of a film and shouting “Best Picture!!” — What?? Oh ok, I’m gonna go talk to someone else about this movie.
My comment was more of a joke at the expense of gamers who can’t relate to games that dont’t have a good score(number) is obsessed with lists, and declaring things GOTY with little to afterthought.
Of course. As a gamer, it is only natural to be obsessed with numbers and lists.
I dunno, I fucking hate numbers especially when they are visually present in games. Gamers need to learn that video games are allowed to be average or pretty good without being great or bad. It’s something that movies generally thrive on.
Gamers also have to understand different people have different tastes, but they don't!
Oh my god that is a really annoying tendency and I see it all the time. It's like some people are incapable of talking about a game they like without prefacing that it's the greatest thing they've ever experienced.
I see that a lot with TV shows too. Hey check out this new streaming series, btw it's the greatest artistic achievement in the history of television.
Swerving to the more serious response here, but it would be pretty easy to throw that right back at you and say "learn to let people engage with and enjoy the medium in whatever way they wish."
I mean realistically that is what I am doing. If I spot mindless hype like that I’m moving on, especially when it’s a game I would like to hear more about.
