after playing a good chunk of Riven, it suddenly stopped working (like it was throwing up an audio error, it started working the next day for some reason), so we briefly jumped into The Room from 2014 as we wanted a similar sort of puzzle game.
The Room is cool as hell but after coming off Myst and Riven which do not tell you ANYTHING, it was real bizarre playing an essentially modern puzzle game that has a lot more nudging and QOL stuff. Honestly, I am more enamored with the Myst/Riven style. More games should just be like "We're not going to tell you shit, even how to interact with us. Figure it out."
Like, obviously a lot of what would be tutorials nowadays were in manuals back then, but it is a really interesting experience that creates a lot of fun "Ah-ha!" moments. Like for example, we had figured out how to do a complete circle around all the islands in Riven and that lead to an elevator going UP. I did not expect it to put us where it did. Which was in an elevator we had been in a few times but I never realized it could go DOWN due to the way the screen framed the leaver. And that was really cool. "We could have gone down this whole time? Wow!"
Though I really bounced off La-Mulana which has a similar design ethos mostly because that game is extremely rude and you can die/etc. So I didn't really have the patience for it. But I think there's a balance to be had and so far the Myst series is finding it pretty well for me.
