What's wrong with 5x7 no anti-aliasing? Calculators are perfectly readable.
Chart of characters as seen on a TI-84 calculator, as slightly separated black squares to more easily differentiate the pixels. It includes uppercase, lowercase, punctuation, and some mathematical symbols, all no bigger than 5 pixels across and 7 pixels high.

Yeah, but screens only had, like, a dozen pixels (by which I mean only tens of thousands) apiece, so you couldn't just Don Knuth your way through and talk about how everybody should have clear, legible fonts. Without the benefit of super-expensive industrial displays, that way only lies Comic Sans...
