Azurel Dracolis is, depending on nothing in particular, either Dzamie Deshulian under a dragon-transformation spell hanging out with social links he's cultivated in that persona, or is actually naturally a dragon. His cave houses upwards of several dozen kobolds of the VitAzurel den, at least one mimic, and one friendly slime-griffon.
Azurel maintains friendly relations with the nearby town of Rivershire; although he rarely shows up, himself, his kobolds are familiar faces around town... usually for the better. In contrast, he's less favorably viewed in the capital city a few days' flight away, both for kidnapping Princess Simone twice and for holding her for ransom near half a dozen times - one from proper, from-castle kidnapping, three from her seeking him out (though most citizens believe he was simply sneakier those times), and one from finding the entire royal family held hostage by an enterprising bandit camp and deciding to do something really funny after devouring the troublemakers.
In spite of this antagonism, Azurel and Simone are at least well-mannered towards each other, socially, and have developed a small game of calling each other by "Dragon" and "Princess" despite knowing each other's names. Even halfway through her first time, he left her unbound save for during the trade back (for appearances), and during the times she sought him out to discourage undesired suitors, he had her simply lean against the Decorative Princess-Tying pole rather than going through the trouble of tying her up, fighting, and freeing her after.
He gets anxious when the ransom deadline gets close, more than she does, but both are confident that, should it come to it, he is a dragon of his word and would eat her if he isn't paid.
