Hello how are you?

Prestige TV is a weird topic to think about because while I do like that we're getting longer stories with film-level special effects that don't need to worry about trying to rush through a plot in 90 to 120 minutes it's also interesting to see how solutions to the problems that arise from these new abilities affect the overall quality of the product as a result.

I mainly think about this via the Halo TV series. I actually genuinely like it and am looking forward to season 2 and hoping it continues past that and we see how it handles certain elements of the plot (who at Paramount do I need to proposition to get Arbiter in the show). I like the set and costume design and how much actual practical effects go into the aliens before they're enhanced with CG, and that CG does look really good.

That being said, all those computer generated special effects are expensive, so then there's the question of how they handle allocating the budget per episode. It feels like certain elements of the show are borne from needing to address these limitations; the Covenant is a coalition of alien races but we can't always have expensive CG characters on screen, so our main POV for Covenant stuff is a human defector. We've got big battle scenes with plasma bolts flying everywhere and aliens fighting humans a bunch, how do we offset that? Well, it would be best to have a whole subplot that only involves human characters so that we have places to divert CG funds from, hence the Madrigal plotline.

These elements kind of end up being the weaker parts of the series? I never really got invested in Makee as a character and the Madrigal stuff felt really disconnected from the main plot, even if it does seem to tie in somehow. On a practical level I can see why they're there but I can't help but feel like maybe there might have been any better way to do this.

Anyway it's an okay show and as someone who was deep into Halo for a good few years I really like it.

It makes a hell of a lot more sense than the many "This was a Mass Effect script turned to a Halo show" or "This was some generic sci-fi script" theories going around.

Granted fans like that use "generic sci-fi" as replacement for "thing I don't want Halo to do".
