wait, how did I never realize that Dauphin, Manitoba is named in honour of the Dauphin of France? I guess it being pronounced daw-fin didn't help but you'd think I would have at some point wondered why a town in the middle of a continent is named dolphin

When you first hear about it, you think it must be some sort of completely different meaning in French, and the similarity to "dolphin" is a coincidence. After all, why would the name for the heir apparent to the French crown be named after an aquatic mammal?

But no. Not only is it just French for "dolphin", it's called that because there are dolphins on the coat of arms!
