i will once again point out how the most effective way to stop a company making a terrible change is to make it painful for them, and the only way a corporation feels meaningful pain is through their bottom line. corporations make decisions on cost-benefit analyses, and you have to make the cost outweigh the benefit.
if you dislike this change and want to prevent it from going through:
- if you have a discord nitro subscription, cancel it, and in the cancel survey, pick your reason as "other" and put the link to the announcement (https://discord.com/blog/usernames) as your reason.
- encourage similar-minded people to likewise cancel their discord nitro subscriptions
- try to convince those who are on the fence, or who do not care, why this change is bad and that it's worth acting on. it helps to read up on others' opinions here as well, both against and for.
- convince others to convince others! even small cascades can cause major dents in tight budgets.
some of the lost nitro features can be augmented back with custom discord clients, such as BetterDiscord for desktop or Aliucord for Android. maybe encourage those missing nitro to consider it in the meantime.
