beyond nuts that people are mad about the wet paper bag of base d2 difficulty getting upgraded to being just a normal paper bag

edit: also funny to me that he always self-aggrandizingly calls these Elitist Datto takes, because that kind of encourages the interpretation, whilst he's... not really saying anything elitist, just an honest assessment of how a lot of stuff is tuned for a less-invested audience and how that affects the game's heart of all of its audience

in reply to @eden's post:

i rarely trust gamers but as far as Inevitable Popular White Guys go, datto has remained remarkably nuanced over the years โ€” i mean this video dances towards elitism but i suspect he's right about vanguard ops being fine.

a big part of the difficulty/rewards system thing for me is that i think bungie has trapped themselves โ€” it's really, really hard to nerf the rewards they've already handed out but i don't think i'm supposed to have quite this many enhancement cores lying around unused or multiple sets of masterworked armor or whatever. i've seen your solo GM clears go up all season, which means that you've been cracking these things the fuck open, and like...should my arsenal be just as strong as yours if i've only played like two of them? hell, i don't think i've used any of the loot from them aside from golf balls, and even that's just to round out some status on stray exotics. it feels like they've been handing out rewards way too powerful for the difficulty of the content they drop from, and now they have to figure out how to balance the hardest stuff against the fact that my random-dropped fire and forget is basically on par with any GM-tier LFR. i don't envy the people whose job it is to figure this out; it sounds exhausting.

one of the funniest parts is that solo gms are incredibly unrewarding since fails are frequent and give you nothing

but yeah i think both there's something to be said for "everyone more or less is working from the same toolbox" vis-a-vis adepts and raid guns not being de facto the best, and also, this year we've definitely had PLENTY of seasonal and world guns shred higher-level loot and be the best. though part of that seems like they go for new perks to be Too Strong, and those end up on more accessible stuff - idk, hopefully the sandbox corrects in y6 because especially for like nightfall guns the past two years been fucking dire. and this is all remarkable considering how strong the 3 raid gun sets & also Duality set were this year (spire doesn't really count, but that's ok, it's a fun-geon and the weapons reflect that)

i'm sure, but even if we filtered to only your successful clears, the point remains: you could get like 20 clears with great loot on each of them and none of it would make you dramatically stronger than me, the girl who's only logged in once or twice a week for 80% of this year. like duality is actually a perfect example of this because that dropped in haunted and gave us stormchaser, one of the most powerful LFRs in the game -- and then two seasons later we have fire and forget, which is easier to get, more customizable, and has no real downsides. i basically don't care about stormchaser anymore, which is great for my FOMO, but doesn't solve the higher-difficulty rewards problem even slightly. which feeds into the rewards problem for nightfalls especially, right? like do i really care about an adept DFA over my crafted austringer i get by running seasonal activities? or even the badly-named heavy nightfall GL over the typhon gl3 which is a world drop? i'm sympathetic to the difficulty tiering problem because right now i genuinely don't think there's a situation which really demands high-level gear over the casual stuff, and i don't know how you fix that without making things harder

ah yeah, i keep forgetting fire and forget is good because the recoil was so bugged for a while lol. also doubtful weโ€™ll get stasis singe soon but idk, when/if it happens yeah, FaF is almost identical to SC, and several seasonal origin traits have been pretty strong (Risen and Seraph) too. Tbf this question is something that leveling is supposed to answer, itโ€™s funny that thatโ€™s become so antiquated in the game that it feels completely irrelevant here (but it is). At least Wendy has Cascade Point and Auto-Loading and stuff, because yeah, DFA in particular would be mid as a world drop, and then itโ€™s an NF drop and the idea of ever using it is just comical
