Rewatched the Gudagnino's 2018 Suspiria last night, which really reaffirmed its place as one of my favorite films. Despite the legendary style and influence of the original, this remake is elevated in my mind - it's remained a film that's stuck with me since I last saw it back during its theatrical run.

Though it has a more muted color pallet; less outrageous (but no less bloody) death sequences; and doesn't have the advantage of a clean, ~90 minute run time, Gudagnino's re-imagining of the '77 giallo watershed adds so much more thoughtfulness, infinitely more thematic depth, and honestly stronger filmmaking from beginning to end. The time it gives to exploring the larger cultural and historical context of its setting brings more richness to the world, and amplifies the horror of its supernatural sections. Every performance (including Tidla Swinton's three) is outstanding, despite and because of the honestly absurd situations during which the actors have to get real pathos.

Just everything about it enthralls me. One of the few movies I could rewatch immediately after seeing it.
