My hobbies are all excuses to collect pretty colors. I enjoy knitting, sewing, running, trombone-ing, gardening, & sci-fi short stories. Coding when necessitated and occasionally for fun. Microbiology for fun & (non-)profit.

At work someone asked if I wouldn't mind if they brought their practice wedding cake so we could all help eat it. It's 4 layers of (real berries) strawberry cake with cream cheese frosting. Her wedding is going to have a delicious cake!

The Origin of the 2pm Cake Break

During the covid mass vaccination campaigns in 2021, I drove all around a multi county area doing inventory on our vaccine & supplies and all the logging, forecasting, etc, plus tech support for the terrible app we'd bought that was supposed to be paperless. The campaign was very rough, mentally and physically, but it had a few bright spots. One of those was the 2pm Cake Break.

On Fridays, we were in a church in a rural area since it was the only large space for miles around and everyone local knew how to get to it. The church & its service coalition really wanted to make sure we were supported and felt welcome. Being Methodist, that meant food.

They always had a good lunch ready at 11am (a lot of us had breakfast at 5am those days) and that included cake for dessert. We'd usually not have enough time to eat lunch and cake, so starting around 2pm we'd all start swapping out to grab a slice of homemade cake.

The 2pm Cake Break did so much for our mental health. Like, I'd see a nurse just looking done for the day, but then I'd remind them it was 2:45pm and I hadn't seen them take a Cake Break yet... How about I tell Traffic we're closing their table for a bit after this vial? Or I'd be digging into PowerApp trying to find info for a bug report and just not getting it. But after cake? Suddenly the world wasn't so bad.
