My hobbies are all excuses to collect pretty colors. I enjoy knitting, sewing, running, trombone-ing, gardening, & sci-fi short stories. Coding when necessitated and occasionally for fun. Microbiology for fun & (non-)profit.

I have a tall 3'x4' raised bed this year & want to try square foot gardening. Undecided on a second cucumber plant-- if not, I'll put the basil in the north corner. (Basil is in a bucket since it's so frost sensitive and it's easier to move indoors if we get a late frost.)

May also move the carrots to buckets and put a basil there; they really enjoyed their bucket this fall/winter and I can keep the soil looser for them.

(The mint has to stay in its bucket!)

My cucumbers had aphid problems last year so I'm trying nasturtium as a trap crop (and hopefully getting some tasty blooms myself).

Thoughts/bits welcome!

I originally thought of marigolds, but wound up going nasturtium instead after reading that they tasted kind of like watercress. I should have an extra bucket and more helpful flowers=good thing, so I'll see!

The dill is a great pest-avoider, too, and did help with keeping bad things away, especially when in bloom. Now, of course, the swallowtails show up and eat it, but those are Good Bugs.
