Yesterday, 1,700 Disneyland Resort employees overwhelmingly voted to unionize with Actors' Equity Association—953 were in favor of unionization and 258 were not. According to the Los Angeles Times" these are the employees who do much of the face-to-face interaction with guests. As they put it: "The workers regularly don full-body costumes of well-known animated Disney characters. They also portray so-called lookalike characters, such as the Disney princesses, in which the actors’ faces are exposed while performing. These employees work at meet-and-greets in the parks, perform in parades and are part of dining experiences in the Disneyland Resort hotels."

Prior to this point, these workers had been one of the few sections of Disneyland Resort's workforce to not be unionized; their counterparts at Walt Disney World are also currently unionized. (My cursory understanding is that at least some of those Walt Disney World employees are also under the Actors Equity banner, and that the union has generally good relations with Disney.) Primary interests for these workers going into negotiations with Disney will be "improving health & safety, wages, benefits, working conditions and job security."—health and safety in particular is a big concern, as injury and discomfort are frequent with these jobs.
