When I was in high school, I took two years of American Sign Language... I never left my house and wasn't a social butterfly in school, so I ended up not becoming fluent. This was on top of not taking a third year... but, something the teacher told me that stuck with me is how useless lip reading is. This was in the context of deaf people being expected to lip read of course ("Just read people's lips") but there's so little you can glean from the movement of lips because many words look the same. In fact, only something like 30% of english can be properly lip read... I'm thinking about this because with a number like that, it truly makes me wonder why we even expect hearing people to be able do this.
