Been holed up with my dolls to hide the pain! Here's what I've done in the month since I've got them.
Darian!
Darian pictured above, the faceplate I made myself (water side decals for the eyes + painted the eyebrows).
The peace sign hand is also a re-cast. I ordered a bunch of hand extras (in Rogier's skin tone) but none of them fit my Ob11 or YMY dolls, so I stuffed them with clay and put them on the hand nubs for the right fit, then molded them. It turned out to be a legit thing I can do, as the hands fit great onto the nub, don't fall off, and aren't a herculean effort to take on/off (unlike the default hands that the dolls came with). There is a huge bubble at the back of the hand so it's not perfect, but given this was just a test to see if it's doable, I don't mind.
I did order some more hand extras and I'm going to wait on those to see if they actually fit (they SAY they're supposed to fit YMY dolls but that's what the first ones said so I don't trust them๐). If they don't, I'm going to stick all the hands on one big mold sheet, so I can have them for both Darian/Devin and Rogier.
Blank head casts

My current goal for these dolls is to ultimately make a Devin doll, because Darian needs his twin! So this means I had to find a blank nendo head to sculpt hair onto. For some reason, these are insanely hard to find, and every one I found that's still in stock is an utter price gouge. I ended up paying $30 for one ๐ but I never have to get another one, so it's okay.
My mold looks good, but I accidentally cut too far in the bottom (I mold them as circles and I need them to stand up so I cut the bottom), into the mold, so there is a small hole. Thankfully I haven't seen any leakage when I rubberband the shit out of it. The casts come out good and fit the faceplates. But I am facing a problem where there are HUGE holes at the top.
At first I thought it was air hole problem because I forgot to put an air hole in the mold, so I cut one out and tried again. The hole was even bigger now. Spouse said it might be because the resin is viscous, so it may be taking more time to fill small holes, thus a large portion is gone at the top, and it was suggested to heat the resin to make it more fluid, wait a few minutes, and then see if the resin isn't topped off anymore.
I tried it, babysitting it for a few minutes, sure enough the resin in the spout went down quite a bit. So I poured more. This happened 2-3 times, but then it started slowly Overflowing out of the spout??? For some reason??? I don't understand how the hell it OVERFLOWS if it needed more resin? I had to wipe the spout several times because it was slowly seeping out as I poured other casts. We'll see how it ends up looking... kind of afraid.
Sculpting and Clothes

Since faceplates, molding and etc. have taken most of my time I haven't had much time to practice sculpting or sewing, which are big parts of my plan. I'm still in ultra noob stages of sewing, I've only made one shirt that's vaguely acceptable, I want to learn how to sew sleeves correctly before I use any of the fabric from old shirts I have.
I've sculpted a couple of things, learning a lot of nuggets of wisdom from watching YouTube videos. I bought some molds from Etsy that I'm excited about. My technique sucks but I want to get better.
Other stuff
Most importantly the reason I wanted to get into all this is so I didn't have to pay anyone for faceplates or have to wait for my faceplates to be finished, I could have them exactly as I wanted whenever I wanted. It took me many tries but I successfully got the right combinations of pigments for faceplates that perfectly match their body's skintone. I am very proud of that. Because the original artist I commissioned used official GSC faceplates, which don't match the bodies exactly. Nobody in the world would ever notice because they're always clothed, but it really
really bothered me so now I have them in the right skintones.
I've never felt more productive. I would say I was more productive this month than the entire year. I've done something every day for these dolls since I got them. I still have so much to learn.
I would love to make dolls of other Souls characters in the future. I think I recall someone who made a custom Valtr nendo floating around on Twitter. It would be so cute to have Souls characters to pose since there's not much in the way of Souls merch, and I love side characters that never get merch made of them. (Really want dolls of my Ludwig and Laurence HC's...)
But I am not sure how to make characters who wear armor, like Artorias or Vyke, poseable. The armour would have to be sculpted in a way that allows movement in the joints. I have the Vyke poseable figure I could probably use as a reference. If it's not possible, I would still like to sculpt static clay figures of Souls characters.
Going to just keep trying and ignoring my problems in favour of pursuing hobbies ๐คช
