monoliths are super rare generated structures from back when minecraft grass was a wonderful shade of fluorescent lime green - that is to say, from a few early versions of Minecraft Infdev until terrain generation was rewritten in Alpha 1.2.0
Today I've been using a tool - https://kahomayo.github.io/monolith-renderer/ - to quickly scroll through randomly seeded worlds in these early versions to see if I could get one of these insane structures to generate in close proximity to the world spawn
After a while, I was finally able to get what I was looking for. In world seed 99506786772956, a monolith that generated over a staggering thousand-blocks wide is present less than 200 blocks away from the world spawn
in a few select versions of infdev, they generate with a sea of nothingness beneath them - future versions fixed this by properly placing bedrock at y=0 and flooding the underside of this surface with water
i've been wanting to play through minecraft from the very beginning for a long time - I ran a minecraft server with the gimmick of starting in alpha and progressing all the way through to modern day a little over a year ago that started in a1.1.2_01 and ended in b1.2 (so... about 3 major versions lol) - hopefully being able to use this nifty structure can keep me entertained for longer than before
