I was watching the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode The Defector, and noticed with great interest that there was a planet called Nelvana 3, in the Nelvana solar system. Could the Star Trek people have noticed the episodes of Care Bears with the cast flying through space on the SS Friendship? Turns out that yes, they totally did, and yes, it was a deliberate reference to the Canadian animation studio that made those episodes.

In rewatching the series for my blog, I realized that the Galaxy-class ships seem to all get named for 1970s animation.
