nintendo is fucking up their public image (to the semi-diehard fans at least) so now i'm just waiting for people to make definitive guides on how to pirate nintendo media

MikeyHillus
@MikeyHillus
  • NES/Famicom/Dendy emulation: FCEUX or Mesen
  • SNES emulation: Snes9x or Mesen
  • Game Boy + Color emulation: SameBoy
  • Game Boy Advance emulation: mGBA
  • N64 emulation: P64 seems to have a vulnerability right now, so try using Simple64 or Parallel Launcher
  • GameCube and Wii emulation: Dolphin
  • DS emulation: MelonDS (You can also play it on android) or DeSmuME
  • 3DS emulation: Citra
  • Wii U emulation: Cemu
    • From @nervcorp: nintendo is shutting down online server access for the wii u and the 3ds on march 27th btw - homebrew literally NOW!!!!!! there's not a better time to!!!
  • Switch emulation: Ryujinx
    • Rest in peace, Yuzu
  • I would love to share ROM sites but I really, really don't want them to get taken down
    • From @fearb33k33p3r: if you want to know where to actually GET roms, do not use a big romsite like emuparadise. the more primitive and direct the download, the better.

please comment for anything else i should know!! sharing will only share it with your followers/passerbys but comments can be seen on any post so please do that!! thanks!!

Adding on to say Cemu is really good for Wii U emulation!

DS emulation: MelonDS (PC) MelonDS Unofficial android port. Supports online play including connecting to wiimfii's fan servers, but if you get a BIOS + Firmware off the internet it's probably been banned from wiimfii. Desmume is considered the standard for speedrunning, but lacks feature support.
Gameboy and Gameboy Advance emulation: mGBA for PC, and on android My Boy! Lite + My OldBoy Lite with internet access turned off in the settings is passable for most games, but only lets you have one savestate. There are paid versions, but I'm assuming you don't want to pay for an emulator.

3DS emulation: Citra

For N64 emulation, I personally recommend Simple64, a version of Mupen64plus that adds numerous quality of life features and an easy to use GUI right out the box.

ONE cemu mention in this thread and im bringing it up again because the servers are about to go down!!!!! wii u users deserve credit!!! cemu my beloved!!!

adding onto this for non nintendo emulation because im obsessed with psx rn
duckstation is a psx emulator (objectively the best one) because it's (1) free and opensource (unlike epsxe) and (2) actually under active development and runs well (unlike pcsx-xr and it's forks)
pcxs2 and rpcs3 for the ps2 and ps3
ppsspp for my portable fans
and vita3k for psvita (although if you HAVE a vita, it's better to hack it)
xemu for original xbox
redream for dreamcast

ok thats all i can rember.
edit: retroarch is literally valve NSO. please use better frontends. (openemu is cool i think i dunno ive literally never used it but it's not literally steamdeck NSO)
have fun, and get fucked nintendo!

video game giants making their older games less playable is a cardinal sin of the 2020s so far and i highly encourage that you all get into it now. also retroarch is convenient for sorting BUT i recommend you just have many different shortcuts because they really gutted duckstation

I actually recommend Mesen over FCEUX for modern hardware. It's faster and better, though FCEUX is less intensive on older hardware.

bsnes is better than Snes9x, though with similar caveats to FCEUX.

If you don't mind RetroArch, then Mupen64Plus-Next is the absolute top N64 emulator. simple64 is still considered the best standalone emulator, however. Note that Project64 is actively not recommended by https://emulation.gametechwiki.com , where I am getting all of the information for this from.

mGBA is the top emulator for GBA, but SameBoy is better for GB and GBC emulation.

While not the absolute best, I will bring up DeSmuME as an alternative if you don't need DSi functionality.

suyu has unfortunately been shut down, leaving Ryujinx as the best Switch emulator.

The original Citra fork has been shut down alongside yuzu, but the PabloMK7 fork is still receiving updates and features.

Unless something has changed that I don't know about, Cemu and Dolphin are currently the only viable emulators for the relevant systems.

Since I'm here, I might as well throw in the PS emulators:

DuckStation is the best for PS1.

PCSX2 is the best for PS2.

RPCS 3 is the best and currently only viable PS3 emulator.

PK201 is the best emulator for the PocketStation, though MAME is the next best and is necessary if you wish to play on anything other than Windows.

PPSSPP is currently the recommended PSP emulator.

Finally, Vita3K is the ONLY PS Vita emulator.

I hope this list is helpful!

yeah i respect that. it works and it works well. i hear some folks like pizzaboy GBA as an android GBA emulator, though i hadn't heard of it when i made my addition to the post. i've had some really bad experiences with GBA emulators on android, i remember there was one i tried that seemed to have decent reviews and when i opened it it ran worse than skyrim with 500 mods.
