I love the presentation of this so much. Like such a cohesive game space.
I have a long-abandoned prototype with the circle world+digging thing... but I made the width of the world cells in radians double every so often as you dug deeper to avoid too-skinny cells. It always felt bad visually - curious if you played with similar/other ways of avoiding tiny slices, or if keeping planet radius small makes it a non-issue.
Was this perhaps inspired by the recent xkcd that was interactive and you could explore space in your rocket ship?
