There's currently an issue where deeply-nested comment threads squish up against the box edge and become unreadable, as detailed in this bug report. This got me thinking about alternative designs until I came up with something I liked and decided to implement.

This script flattens replies down to one indent level and collapses them behind a click-through. If a reply isn't directly responding to the one above it, then a quote is embedded with a clickable link to the comment it's replying to.

i appreciate the fact that it disables replies past a certain point; I have seen vicious arguments truncated and extinguished as they became too narrow to read

Agreed, if you can't make an argument before your reply gets squished to the right, you lose.
