I beat Resident Evil 4 Remake the other day (It's great.) and had the immediate urge to play more RE. Four choices presented themselves to me:

  • Start a NG+
  • Buy it on PC (I played on Xbox) and start a new game there with nude very normal mods
  • Play Resident Evil 2 Remake, which I've never played but I know is a universally beloved game
  • Play Resident Evil 6, which I've never played but I know is a universally maligned game

A lot of really great choices and one filled with a lot of pain.

Anyway, I've beaten the Chris campaign of Resident Evil 6 and let me tell you: that is a fucking dumb videogame. In some ways, I mean that very charitably. There's a lot of goofy writing which feels like the zenith of whatever tone they started going for with 5. The action set-pieces are like, Uncharted-level batshit but with 10% of the budget. It's charming as a time capsule of how ambitious developers wanted to be in whatever means were on the table for them. We got a lot of weird shit back in the PS2 days for it, too. We don't really get much of that anymore, so it's always fun to experience no matter the quality it manifests at.

Holy shit I hope the rest of his campaign is as good as the opening chapter because that whipped ass. Maybe it's from playing the Chris campaign first and setting my expectations to Low, but being in a tiny American town where zombie-ass zombies are crawling around and you get to do wrestling moves on them is exactly what I was lookin' for. Totally the dumb action game vibe I want out of whatever game they turned 6 into.

6 is SOOOO goofy and I'm glad you're playing through it. Maybe Chris campaign was wiped from my mind and i don't remember the badness 🤮

The ppl I knew who were upset with it mostly complained that it wasnt built to be scary. Still had a decent time tho!!

I played closer to when it was out and i love what they did for co-op. Bc the campaigns intersect, sometimes you could co-op with another pair of people from an entirely different campaign.

I'm probably one of the few people who enjoyed RE6 quite a bit, but also recognize many of the flaws and how annoying the game can be, especially with its QTEs and other annoying bits. It can be a blast in co-op with the right partner.

Not sure which version of RE6 you're playing, I know the later ports had fixes and upgrades built into them. The PS4/XB1 versions had FOV fixed a bit compared to previous releases, the PC has them but you can adjust it farther too. My recommendation if you're looking for any advice is go into the camera settings if you havent already and put the FOV as high as possible, then dial it back if its too much until you find what you like. It fixes one of the biggest FOV problems with the game.

The other setting I would recommend is the one that allows you to auto complete QTEs. It will do most of the QTEs for you, with some exceptions, because for some reason, the option still doesn't work on all QTEs.

Hope you continue to find the fun in the game!

Chris' campaign is goofy and definitely not in line with the rest of the series at all, but I kind of have a fondness for it where I didn't have much of for Jake's campaign. It kind of works for Chris' overall series through the campaign like you mentioned, and it has a lot of really silly ways it tries to build on the stakes of previous action-oriented segements throughout the franchise with things like the guys who shoot at you from RE5. I can appreciate how they wanted to hit a different tone with each of the campaign segments, even if I don't think the game really is effective in most areas at the end of the day and the experience ends up a little muddled as a result.

Leon's has some really nice positives though, looking forward to seeing more of your thoughts on it!

Yeah like... being on the other side of it just at all and now with a bit of distance I can appreciate what it was going for, and I think tone-wise it's right on the money, but the gameplay was just... dreadful, for the most part. Enemies shooting back at you can be fun but its execution in Chris' campaign is pretty dreadful, which like I said was really not helped by how bad the level design was in some situations. The aircraft carrier level in particular was miserable.
