sorta-spoilers below the fold

game is down tremendously bad right now jesus christ. i mean sandbox-wise it's fine im having more fun with strand than i have with basically any subclass since launch but dude the writing this entire season has been terrible. the last mission in particular feels like i'm playing another game or i'm playing like a fan mod of destiny 2. these aren't the characters i know, this isn't the style of writing i know out of the game.

if we're just spinning our tires for the entire year because lightfall wasn't even supposed to exist... it's gonna be fucking rough skies ahead

in reply to @erica's post:

I'm a big story/lore guy, don't really care that much about buildcrafting or PVP etc, and I bugged out without even finishing the Lightfall campaign because I simply wasn't enjoying the writing or the gameplay. I wondered if maybe I would be missing something in the seasonal story stuff, but I guess not! Bit of a relief, that

it's a bummer cuz last boss aside i actually really like the gameplay part of lightfall! the campaign levels are fun, even if legendary is... i'd say poorly balanced overall.

but yeah, story has always been the primary motivator for me so i'm really... struggling. last season was me getting way into the more end-game stuff of destiny and investing myself in all of that and it feels like i just picked the worst possible time for it. table scraps.

Yeah!!! Yeah, like, I was SO hyped all the way through Witch Queen, I felt like it got Destiny storytelling RIGHT in every way, and to have such a pitch-perfect chapter followed by a story that just felt trite and superfluous end-to-end is a real kick in the teeth that made me question how much I want to invest in the game in the future (Lance's passing also made me feel kind of weird about it as well, though that's obviously nobody's fault)

I swear if one more character restates the stakes of a situation in the same way that they’ve already been stated like five times,

the ‘destroy an engine’ was a cool idea i think but felt executed on a shoestring time budget. it’s really funny to me still that people in the first week were like “lightfall should have had the tone of the seasonal storyline!” bc i get what they mean wrt drama and stakes but the tone of s20 from day 1 was like, trite-beyond-trite. why does everyone this season talk like they’re in a group therapy session!! like have you heard that one exchange in one of the BGs where crow’s like “nobody’s in the mood for philosophy right now misraaks”, it was unreal. and then similarly in BGs misraaks being like oooo the darknesss oooooo it brings much sufferiiiiiing i’m never gonna use it and maras like There May Come A Time You Must Use The Darkness Or Lose Everything like agh man it is just. not it

and it's not even good schmaltz!! like that's already largely a miss on me it's not what i'm here for with this game but this whole season has felt like... i was telling lena about it and all i could think about was how the tone of the writing this season is the same as like, when your ISP is running ads on YouTube that are like Hey Let's Talk About Mental Health 🤝

I've been hearing this from a lot of the people I know who still play (I quit back in 2020 but I've still been following the story as best I can without actually playing the game.) It seems like this entire season has really suffered some sort of development hell. It's always possible for them to come back swinging next season but idk you know?

i peeled off a couple of weeks in after one of my least favorite day one raid experiences and seeing the seasonal story content was all as bad as the campaign. i guess crunch can do this to a good team but it literally feels like they just showed everyone involved in witch queen the door. wanted to give the new(-ish) Witness retcon a shot but no, the fanfic character is fanfic tier. this sucks!
