frustrating to see japanese twitter users (mostly) migrate to misskey because as far as i can tell it's a blockchain-based fediverse thing. like it's not even a mastodon fork it's entirely it's own ecosystem so you can't even like, be on a masto instance that follows mstdn or pawoo or whatever It's based on activitypub so you can cross-pollinate a little but I don't see people really doing that, and I expect it to succomb to the same fate pawoo did re: western instances because of Japanese content policies :s

also lowkey the UI for it is insane. this is like looking at a computer terminal from a 2004 capcom game (derogatory)

in reply to @erica's post:

I don't know about any blockchain stuff, but according to the github it uses ActivityPub, so it should be able to communicate with mastodon servers (following/being followed at least)

edit before I even post this: ah, there it is, web3 sponsor

Following people on Misskey from Mastodon instances works; I follow a few Japanese Misskey users from my Mastodon instance. There's a chance whatever server you're on blocks their servers though :/ A lot of the Japanese fediverse is cut off from the rest of the fediverse by instance blocks

MissKey is interesting to me because it is the ONE Mastodon server software, as far as I know, that lets you "bring your own domain", like the same way you can have thousands of people who own their own domains but the domains all direct to GMail you can have lots of users connecting to a single server but their usernames all have their own domains. Which also means that you could move servers and no one can tell because your username doesn't change. I don't know how well this works in practice but in theory this fixes like, two fundamental broken things about Mastodon.

But uh… …yeah, that… that interface. Hm.

Yeaaaahhh..... missky lets you put catears on your pfp aaaand, that's about it, I otherwise cannot stand it and following people from other instances is a crapshoot because half the posts friends make don't make it to my home feed when it's not in the local feed. Also the local feed is a veritable minefield of dicey content.

I just now discovered misskey and trying to gather information and this is like one of the very few posts I can find even explaining it. is the UI still currently as bad as that screen? all I know is I absolutely love the chaotic energy of the splash page, like some nonsensical fake internet from a futuristic anime (complimentary)
