my brain is separating itself from my skull imagining reading that post and thinking they meant "only brands will have numbers" instead of "users who use this feature will have some numbers". it was pretty fucking crystal clear if you are capable of understanding context and how human beings speak!! what the fuck man!!
someone asked a staff member if the site could add metrics but as opt-in, the staff member responded with a bit of a long post explaining their plans that when they add user subscriptions, users who use that feature will get access to some metrics because they would need it for financial reasons but that the metrics would be specifically tailored to that purpose and not "you get numbers like on twitter, now". they tldr'd their post by referring to that subset of users as 'businesses'
which some people extremely bad-faith read that as "so brands will get metrics and regular users don't, what the fuck" and now a whole thing has unraveled because a) some people can't think, b) some people join websites with mission statements that are clearly outlined and go 'i disagree, change it', and c) people who make things should just make things and never have any personality or whatever ever.
Fuckin' YEESH; that combined with the weird doomer mastodon thread goin' around ya really gotta wonder what some folks' problem is with a web'd site.

I will never understand people who love numbers like that. Like, I love numbers. (b - a) / (c - a) is one of the prettiest formulas I've ever seen. But likes counts? I don't need that. Likes in Cohost just let me know someone saw my post. And it's nice.
I'm starting to wonder if people actually want numbers or if they just want to harangue the devs
