ok i will address the immediate thing here and pedantically point out that doujin means "self-published". doujinshi is closer to the truth but it's a comic and it's ok to call it that! especially since i'm not japanese!
THAT SAID, yes i learned a lot. some tips:
- use the medium! it took me a couple drafts to realize i didn't need to draw a thing the characters were saying or vice versa. understanding that made world of difference to how i structured my panels and stuff
- be consistent! set constraints. my biggest regret with Hype Train is how different it looks from page to page because i didn't have a consistent brush size or tones.
- ask for help from people you trust! i got invaluable feedback from friends who took a glance at early drafts and pointed out some difficulties in either the writing or storyboarding. some stuff i caught on my own but someone who hasn't been staring at the thing for hours and hours will always catch what you can't
i got a bunch more stuff i learned that i wanna share but i'll save that for a post-mortem thing when i'm done with super hype train
