Man, sometimes you remember 13 Sentinels exists and then you're reminded that Vanillaware actually went out and made a real ass PC-98 adventure game squarely circa 1995 in HD two and a half decades later. The only difference is you choose one of 13 different mouse cursors to control with the analog stick. It's the exact genre that house style was made for all along and god, if there's any justice in this world, it's what they'll hang their hat on and make more of those because lord knows we could sure do with more of them in this day and age.

It really is! Its existence just continues to flabbergast me because the market for anything else remotely like it in Japan has just diminished precipitously. A smattering of indie releases plus some legacy stuff, mostly games that Arc System Works sneaks out when nobody's really looking, hardly any of it localized, and never anything remotely approaching that sort of scope, scale, and budget in most any respect. I don't know how George Kamitami convinced Sega/Atlus to let them keep that game alive for like seven years straight and I understand even less how it sold extremely well by the genre's standards there today, but by god, they somehow cracked the code. Other passion projects in that exact mold have straight up killed other Japanese developers, so to see Vanillaware of all devs pull through is all the more astonishing.
