i wouldn't spend much time with 'em if they didn't !
idk it comes in varying degrees i suppose. some engage me emotionally because they resonate with the artist in me (like alan wake II, recently) and some engage me intellectually because they offer me new perspectives on things i am unfamiliar with (devotion, 1000xRESIST, venba). there's a game in particular i can't talk about quite yet because i played it pre-release but is extremely this and it's been on my mind basically every day since playing it.
of course, some games are also, like, the last of us and final fantasy xvi where they challenge me intellectually in trying to figure out how the fuck anyone sees anything meaningful in its storytelling.
