Early on I bought a lot of cheap shit off Yesstyle and just tried a lot of things in private to see what made me feel the way I wanted to feel/look like. It's a bad way of doing this but it worked for me idk. Helped me realise that the look I 'want' isn't necessarily the look that works best on me. I don't think anyone really has an innate sense of style, you just develop it over time.
You can definitely help with friends who know a bit about it and look up fashion catalogs/blogs and stuff to point you in more specific directions! Trying to approach that stuff less as "how do i recreate this outfit" and more "what are the individual parts of this outfit and why do they work together" is also sorta key. Fashion's like a canvas, right. Composition, color, contrast--stuff kinda works the same.
