I keep forgetting to mention these things! I probably ought to!
Vampire Survivors (Switch)
Ah, what a fucked up thing for them to do, putting this on Switch. I've stopped playing this because once you get the rhythm down (and are blessed with the right RNG), the last five minutes or so are just an all-out visual and aural assault. Just so much noise...it's too much. Good game, though.
Brotato (Switch)
Hell yeah, this sucker squeaked out on Switch ahead of Vampire Survivors by a week or two, and it's fantastic. A lone potato who can carry up to six weapons, gunning down weird purple aliens in a small arena. It's simpler than VS, but no less exhilarating once you get into it. If anything, it's easier to get into - the runs are pretty short!
Earth Defense Force 2 (Switch)
"Grandpa why did you buy this in Japanese on Switch when you own the cart for your Vita and cou-" I didn't ask you! I didn't ask you!!
Anyway it's good*. If only there was a way I could understand the writing and what was being said. Too bad no other versions exist.
*It's fun writing in a glib way but I'll circle back! I'm actually having more fun with this one that I tend to the other EDFs I've dabbled with in the past (2017, 4.1, 5), maybe precisely because I can't understand it. Having to occasionally hold my phone up with Google Translate to read weapon descriptions has me sticking to more tried and true weapons, which ordinarily might seem stale, but it's forcing me to go with what works vs. constantly experimenting and dying. That's...backwards from the ideal, right? You should be experimenting with weapons, mixing it up! But it turns out some of those guns just suck, and constantly switching to them got me nowhere. Making progress here!
Street Fighter 6 (PC)
Damn I have not written about this a bit, have I? It's fantastic. I think maybe the difficulty spikes in World Tour mode are a bit much, and while I appreciate what the modern controls do to make the game more accessible, they're not for me. But the actual meat of the fighting? It's excellent. Some day I will understand the whole drive gauge, how to do the little green dashes and stuff. But for now, it's nice to play a Street Fighter that feels fully formed out of the gate again, and not the sorta Frankenstein mess that was 5.
Clubhouse Games (Switch)
Sometimes you wanna beat your head against Hanafuda and Mahjong, and struggle to learn how to play them. Sometimes you just wanna annihilate the AI at mancala and Yahtzee. And this game lets you do it all. Thank you, Clubhouse Games.
