i'm sure somebody's made a post about them around here before, i feel like i vaguely recall seeing one at least, but i'm thinking about the level backgrounds from Donkey Kong 3: Dai GyakushΕ« again. they've been in the back of my head for years. incredibly inspirational to me both in terms of raw aesthetics and also just in terms of how bizarrely unfitting they are for a game where you mash a button to spray pesticides at donkey kong so he'll stop attacking you with bugs. i wonder if it was a case of someone being handed a game to make a port of with minimum oversight so they just did whatever the hell they wanted with it while still staying within the restrictions? incredible stuff regardless
