given that they're working with standard definition analog videotape from the 70s - granted it was high-end professional stuff, it was still videotape - the amount of detail and quality they're able to pull out of them, while not overdoing it on the HD upscaling, is a masterful tightrope walk that I think they've nailed. (the fringing around edges was I think inherent to the vidicon tubes they were filmed on, and are not, i believe, artifacts of oversharpening)
PAL is fucking cheating. watch any PAL footage that isn't torn to shit and you'll be going "IT LOOKS LIKE HD" because the comparable american TV standard was 30 years older and literally invented before the transistor. it's shocking you can even make out faces in NTSC it's so bad, but by the time we finally found out what an electron was we'd sold 250,000,000 TVs and it was too late to replace the technology that was invented by guys who thought it traveled over the luminiferous aether
