given that they're working with standard definition analog videotape from the 70s - granted it was high-end professional stuff, it was still videotape - the amount of detail and quality they're able to pull out of them, while not overdoing it on the HD upscaling, is a masterful tightrope walk that I think they've nailed. (the fringing around edges was I think inherent to the vidicon tubes they were filmed on, and are not, i believe, artifacts of oversharpening)

PAL is fucking cheating. watch any PAL footage that isn't torn to shit and you'll be going "IT LOOKS LIKE HD" because the comparable american TV standard was 30 years older and literally invented before the transistor. it's shocking you can even make out faces in NTSC it's so bad, but by the time we finally found out what an electron was we'd sold 250,000,000 TVs and it was too late to replace the technology that was invented by guys who thought it traveled over the luminiferous aether

Heck yeah, PAL video presented faithfully! And yeah, whatever's going with those edges is either the tubes or inherent to the analogue tape! There's like the slightest touch of funny line interpolation and maybe a bit of cross-coloration in Romana's hair but like that requires pixel peeping. I think what helps is like they're comfortable letting it still look like standard definition videotape, I think. Like none of the AI "let's make it look like it was shot yesterday in HD" vibes.

The best part is when the conditions are perfect it really can look like it was shot yesterday in HD. See: that second screenshot of Tom Baker. On my phone at least, it's almost indistinguishable from native HD video unless I zoom in on it. Granted that's because it was recorded in a very bright white room but still, every now and then πŸ˜‚
