great game, great art style, wildly confusing and endearing gameplay. you'll never find another one quite like it. truly the height of the old apogee games. it was apparently the result of a troubled development, but Tom Hall's sensibilities shine through brightly. it's a great time!
dual pistols, an mp40, and various rocket weapons are your arsenal. the bullet weapons have infinite ammo, but the rocket weapons only have a few shots before they are permanently spent and must be replaced. in my playthrough i found myself using the mp40 at all times, except in situations where i needed to make some guys explode.
each level is like a puzzle box. only one solution but a long, long journey to get there. luckily this remaster has an improved automap which will help you figure out most levels without hassle. i enjoyed every second of it, even when the levels were confusing and obtuse.
ultimately i was driven to get all of the achievements, complete the shareware episodes, the registered episodes, and the new episodes that came with the remaster. i got a decent way into Extreme ROTT, but those levels were just too extreme for me, even on the easiest difficulty.
i haven't been this immediately hooked on a game in years, honestly. there's also some fantastic workshop levels available, like Operation Fyrewall parts 1 and 2. if you love arcade-y first person shooters from the 90s, this is the remaster for you. the game was sadly overlooked in its time, but this remaster is truly the best way to play it.
