like a game where you can open its level editor, make a level, and release it as a standalone file that runs with that game. some examples that i already know:

  • DOOM
  • Quake
  • Duke Nukem 3D
  • Half-Life
  • Half-Life 2

i'm looking for more examples because i wanna try and improve my FPS level design skills by using an existing game's design toolkit, so i don't have to build a whole new game just to design some cool levels.

in reply to @erysdren's post:

Descent and Descent 2 have a fan-made level editor in alpha that is essentially a reverse-engineer of the original games with a couple improvements to the engine, and notably the ability to even just launch and play levels directly from the editor. Itโ€™s called Inferno.

The games you mentioned are good choices not just because they have tools available to modders, but also they have active modding communities, which are important if you want to strengthen your FPS level design skills.

Like, I'm sure you can go find some other games with tools available, but they aren't going to teach you much if you make levels that no one plays and you have no one around you for comradery or to bounce ideas off of.
