for doing mid-layer changes wlthout a ams! Seems successful; I'm not sure how well it would work for like, full on multicolored prints but it seems like it could? I'm mostly interested in it for first layer embedded designs/text.

the results, btw--I started by trying the stripes in PLA (yellow) even tho I knew it wasn't likely to work and the result was Very Funny--the PETG couldn't adhere to it at all and it just kinda.... rolled/beaded off.

interestingly the black ended up printing matte up until the last 20 or so layers when there were only small hinge bits left--I may need to slow down my outer walls or up the heat on the black now? Maybe it was hotter or cooler or something in my office today vs the last time I printed a medium sized thing in black. It may also be a side effect of having run everything through a dehumidifier? That's the only significant change its been through that I can recall.

Rick fits quite snugly in here; I almost don't need to print out a pin to hold its backpack, but I probably will. I may also do one for the bazooka, but it fits Just So behind its knees so it would mostly be there to hold it in place if Rick is not in the box.

So I got series 23 of these silly little Mobile Suit Ensemble gachapon guys, and two runners had pieces knocked out somewhere between their being molded and me getting them, half way across the world. Thankfully both pieces were from the same runner type (all the MSE guys use the same joints), so the seller sent me one replacement of Rick Dias to make up the deficit. It let me build all four guys, but I still have almost all the pieces to make a second Dias--just missing those two missing joint parts. So I thought to myself, "I have the power, surely I can make this missing-a-arm-due-to-lost-pieces Rick Dias be Alive and have t w o of them!"1

Reader: I so so so have the power. You can hardly tell the difference in these guys. The tolerances are spot on2. This rules, I'm excited to build this guy

  1. I chose series 23 because a) it was one of the cheapest available and b) Barbatos looks neat and his Giant Mace is neat, but in building Rick Dias has stolen my heart; I love its giant bellbottoms and monoeye and jetpack with exclamation mark boosters and bazooka (that apparently shoots... glue?? Rad.)

  2. the post on the elbow/knee joint (the piece on the right side of the photo) isn't perfect, but that's really an execution issue more than the CAD--orientation is Hard for this and I decided it would be best if I did the "slice a bit off a cylinder to print it good against the bed" method, so the post struggles with elephant's foot issues--even with multilayer compensation the scale of this makes dealing with that easier with a knife than iterating slicing settings

I did have to whittle a bit off the shoulder tab; it was fitting on the Graze but not Rick without a little help; must have a slightly snugger pocket in the shoulder 🤷

I've been threatening to get more of these mobile suit ensemble guys and birthday money gave me permission; since you kinda have to order a set imported, they took a while to get here and I've been savoring building the four I got1. Barbatos comes with his shins uncolored, so I fixed it. If the yellow stays on well enough (I have zero intention to seal it) I might add some black to the backpack and shin side plates too. Looking at these pictures reminded me his chest also has a little power symbol thingy so I'll have to fill that some time too, I suppose! Panel lining is just pencil; no nead to be Fancy here as my intent for these is to carry em around and play with them. I need to decide what shape I want each guy's compartments so I can give 'em a similar treatment to my crossbone in a box

these guys are so great,,,

  1. all I have left to assemble from this series at this point is the Ariel, but two joint runners came missing pieces. I haven't fired up the ol CAD n 3D Printer 1-2-punch to fix that yet (the seller is also sending some sort of replacement, but this lets me use the pieces I have to the fullest. Also the language barrier/my on ineptitude makes what specifically is coming unclear)
