tell me your tricks to writing job applications.

I do not have any myself, sorry. You would think that being without a job for a decade would mean that I would be completely desensitized to the entire process, but sadly it's the same problem, no matter what job I apply for.
I tend to spend a day just hating myself as I slowly write down whatever might qualify as a cover letter.

No, seriously.

I liked to joke about my Worksona back in the days. And part of my Worksona was he (this was pre egg crack and I'm incapable of thinking of my Worksona as she because never had to do this as a woman) was super confident about his abilities. Sure like the real world me had terrible self esteem and a messy resume, but that didn't matter to the Worksona, Worksona thought he was the best.

It was a character. And it worked well enough to get me through the hiring process. Tended to fall apart at work after a bit but it at least made the hiring process something bearable

The one thing I can say is to look in unexpected places for your skills. Like if you have volunteered in your community, you have worked on your communication skills and you can follow instructions. Skills like that are super important. If you’re struggling to think of anything, ask a friend to write a cliff notes resume then build off of that. That will remove the feeling of lying about yourself because you’re not the one who first said it.

Use their own wording in your CV or resume when responding to a job posting. If it is an automated process or different folks checking the application vs. writing the requirements, you have a better chance of making it further because you match the posting.
For my sector, the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) approach can be useful if you are answering interview questions or need to draft an essay

This is the /one/ valid space to use a chatgpt bot. Take the posting, throw it in, have it write a cover letter. Take whatever looks remotely usable, and write your own copy based on the few decent bits.

It's something that just. Makes it so much less emotionally draining. You don't have to have a zero point or cold start. Just fix the already existing thing.
