Team 0% is an ongoing effort to clear every single course in the original Wii U Super Mario Maker before the servers shut down in April 2024. If you asked me 2 months ago if that would even be a thing that could be possible, I would have said "of course not," but last month I was recommended this great video that went over the whole thing.
(I can't believe Nintendo really said that to them! That's so fucked up!)
When this video was posted, the number had just crested under 10,000 uncleared levels. A mere 3 weeks later, it's currently somewhere around 5600. They're definitely gonna do this.
I really wanted to help, but it took me until last night to finally dust off my Wii U, and to even get INTO Mario Maker I had to update the console, and it took so long that I didn't really have any time to play any until tonight. It took 2 hours to find something I felt capable of doing and another 2 hours to actually beat the course itself.
The above level, "Dont Stand A 'Ghost' Of A Chance", was uploaded October 18, 2018 and stood uncleared until today. The code is FEA5-0000-03C2-238A. It's not a GDQ showcase-tier fingerbuster but it required a lot of weird tricks, had a lot of seemingly-important-yet-ultimately-redundant items, and I needed my dear roommate @fluttersprite there to remind me to look at Boos at the end so I didn't die while waiting for a Wiggler to give me a key. At one point I got to the goal and died because I was 2 pixels overlapping with a Muncher. You know. The Mario Maker classics. Kind of easy to see why no one wanted to bother with this one for five years.
Mario Maker 1 is really weird to revisit for all its quirks and differences from the second one. Also very odd to revisit the Wii U. They honestly wanted you to use the gamepad for a lot of things you didn't really need to use a second screen for. But I was really happy to contribute to this little historical endeavor - I think everything in Mario Maker honestly DESERVES a clear and I look forward to seeing the full Mario Maker 1 canon completed. Team 0% also organizes similar efforts for Mario Maker 2 - trying to beat everything uncleared from specific years, take out stuff that has gone the longest without a clear. I doubt I'll be picking up Mario Maker 1 again but I'll definitely be picking at Maker 2 efforts here and there. Incidentally, they put together a site that just spits you a random uncleared level from either game, which is how I found the above course. https://smm-zerop.0b101010.services/smm1/random_level/
In my humble IMO, it is very worth keeping an eye on how this progresses. I'm always really excited by cool large-scale community efforts. I am also interested to see what the last course to get cleared will be. I hope it's something a 7-year-old made where they spelled their name using Hammer Bros.
(Hey, has anyone ever put together a group effort to get everyone to beat every level in Sonic & Knuckles Blue Sphere? That would be a good one.)
