the deranged scheduling made the pacing terrible to the point that I had thought the final season was like 3 different seasons, and the venomous fan discourse around the show as it aired made me & my friends feel very negatively about it when it was new. watching it archivally without that stuff swirling around it made us realize that steven universe deserved much better.
i think it is possible to have ignored all of that stuff and come away with a positive impression - but the point is that we are really dwelling on how wrong we were about the show! i don't know how widely held this negativity is, but i always got the impression that the feelings we had were common, anyway.
ah, i didnt watch most of it as it was airing so i might have not been there for most of that
